So far, it doesn't seem Kovář is going anywhere, though next year's KHL rosters are far from being filled. As for Hašek, I don't even think he would unseat Martin Růžička in Pardubice right now.Derek O'Brienhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00126016472764047665noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2707253363878567060.post-33591047502343910162012-05-28T04:49:09.858+02:002012-05-28T04:49:09.858+02:00I'm all for another Czech goalie in the NHL bu...I'm all for another Czech goalie in the NHL but this has to be highly unlikely even as a backup goalie. I'd be surprised if Mrazek earned the backup role in Detroit next season. I think he'll be in the AHL or ECHL if I had to guess. I'm hoping Salak finally gets a chance at an NHL gig. Just curious, what is the status of Jakub Kovar... seems like he's ready for a different league than the extraliga next season. Popperle and Stepanek are in the KHL, Schwarz in Finland... just thinking he must be in demand to move... any ideas?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2707253363878567060.post-14947640787692937882012-05-14T19:07:46.358+02:002012-05-14T19:07:46.358+02:00I am convinced there is something wrong with Kovar...I am convinced there is something wrong with Kovar's glove... he always gets his glove on it but it seems to pop out a lot of the time creating a nasty rebound. He has great reflexes but lousy catching ability... it's like he is playing with 2 blockers. He'll be in tough against Sweden (most likely) in the Quarters... hope he can pull it off. The offense seems to be the big problem though... just not scoring at all and we have some excellent NHL and KHLers that can score.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2707253363878567060.post-45865064610999317412012-05-07T10:57:37.504+02:002012-05-07T10:57:37.504+02:00It was an interesting move to choose a goalie with...It was an interesting move to choose a goalie with no international experience at the senior level, and at least Pöpperle has a bit. However, I don't think goaltending has been the team's problem so far. Frankly, I thought Kovář was quite good against Denmark and, without him, they might not have gotten 3 points. As for Štěpánek, I don't think the loss to Sweden was his fault--Sweden was clearly the superior team in the game. I agree about Kovář, though. After Norway they get two days off, then play Latvia and Italy back-to-back, so each goalie will likely start once. If Kovář plays well in his next two games, start him against Russia. He did play in the clinching game of the Euro Hockey Tour against them, after all. Barring a disaster, I don't see Mrázek playing.Derek O'Brienhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00126016472764047665noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2707253363878567060.post-29784340507899071732012-05-07T02:55:26.084+02:002012-05-07T02:55:26.084+02:00It was a horrible effort... Hadamczak loves him for some reason. His backups would be guys like Pinc and Svoboda so we didn't even have a viable backup. Anyways, with stacked teams he'd always lose in the quarters on some kind of bad bounce. Notice he scored on himself in the KHL playoffs last year to lose a game as well (ala Marc Andre Fleury at the WJHC's). I guess that's just the large market/small market kind of thing at play, even in the Czech Republic. There's no doubt the Extraliga was thrilled at getting Brno, the second-largest city in the Czech Republic, back into the fold. And you're right, realistically, at all levels of the pyramid, teams often earn promotions that they decline because of the added costs involved in competing at the higher level--often it means moving from a regional to a national league, which means increased travel.

As for North American sports leagues, the problem there is the major sports leagues are divided and sub-divided into conferences and divisions due to the costs involved in operating a league over such a vast geographical area. It would make promotion and relegation a logistical nightmare, as essentially the league might need to be re-aligned every year. It is better suited to the smaller European nation states.Derek O'Brienhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00126016472764047665noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2707253363878567060.post-20370752825084048382012-03-02T16:38:09.236+01:002012-03-02T16:38:09.236+01:00Thanks for posting this -- I'll be following P...Thanks for posting this -- I'll be following Petr's stories.

Something I vaguely remember from a couple years back, when Brno bought its way into the top league -- didn't, at the time, Znojmo say that licenses had become too expensive for some clubs to compete in the Extraliga?

If I am indeed remembering that correctly, and assuming the case hadn't changed, how many lower division teams could currently hope to compete fiscally at the top level?
